Who is this course designed for?

This training course is designed for qualified exercise professionals (see eligibility) to deliver the evidence based REACT programme in community venues. The training will equip you to deliver pre-set exercise programmes in a group format to older people transitioning to frailty and whose aim is to improve physical function, maintain independence and increase physical activity.

REACT Training essentially skills-up instructors to deliver specific exercise class content (pre-set session plans), PLUS essential behaviour change support conversations (guided scripts) to older participants assessed as suitable.

This training is the first of its kind for Level 2 exercise instructor’s (see eligibility guidance below) and sets out to raise the bar on meaningful, purposeful exercise for best gains to prevent frailty and improve physical function. Importantly, REACT Training equips instructors with delivery skills and conversations to better support physical activity and exercise dose to reduce frailty and improve their ability to retain independence. It has been shown to be cost-effective compared to usual care alone over a 2 year period based on its improvements to quality of life.

The course content has been expertly designed to ensure level 2 exercise instructors and service leads have the explicit guidance they need to remain in scope and deliver EVIDENCE- BASED exercise ideally as part of a broader strength and balance primary prevention of falls offer.

(NB: REACT is NOT a falls prevention programme, it IS a programme to prevent frailty and improve physical function. REACT does not reduce falls, so people who are at high risk of falls should be signposted to an evidence-based falls prevention programme (such as FaME or Otago). It could be appropriate as a step down programme after FaME or Otago.

REACT is designed to be delivered in leisure centres and community venues to older people assessed as suitable.
